VIRTUS is the program name that identifies best practices programs designed to help prevent wrongdoing and promote “rightdoing” within religious organizations. The Virtus programs empower organizations and people to better control risk and improve the lives of all those who interact with the Church. The brand name “VIRTUS” derives from the Latin, and means valor, moral strength, excellence, and worth. In ancient times, virtus denoted a way of life and manner of behavior that always aspired to the highest, most positive attributes of people and aspects of human interaction. In this sense, the brand
name reflects precisely the mission and objectives of the program. Although specifically developed to prevent child abuse it also extends to protection of the elderly, the infirm, developmentally delayed and “shut-ins”. VIRTUS is an initiative sponsored by the National Catholic Church, beginning in 1998. VIRTUS was developed by a nationwide panel of content experts assisted by program and service providers. VIRTUS programs are under constant review and modifications to reflect new learnings and new needs. Each Archdiocese has been charged to develop a program that addresses abuse of children and in the larger picture any person that is in need of protection from sexual, physical and or verbal abuse. The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston has selected the
VIRTUS Program as the vehicle by which all information is distributed to all parishes in the Diocese in a cohesive manner.

participation by all in the parish and most especially parents and grandparents.
Program 1. is the first program to be attended and then program 2. is the
refresher that must be taken each 5 years there-after.
